Former Hanau Mayor Hans Martin Remembered on 10th Anniversary of Death

Hans Martin, former mayor and later Oberbürgermeister of Hanau, Germany, died on 31 July 2016 at age 85. He served as mayor from 1966‑1972 and as Oberbürgermeister from 1972‑1984 and again from 1985‑1994. During his tenure he guided the city through the 1972‑74 Hessian administrative reform, oversaw the integration of surrounding districts, and promoted the construction of schools, cultural facilities and the Museum Schloss Steinheim.

Current mayor Claus Kaminsky, also of the SPD, commemorated Martin as one of the most influential local politicians in Hanau’s history, noting that the modern city would be “unrecognisable without him.” After retiring in 1994, Martin remained active as honorary citizen and chaired the Martin‑Luther‑Stiftung for 15 years. He and his wife Marga died in 2016 within weeks of each other and were buried at Kesselstädter Friedhof.
