Juan Orlando Hernández appears in Honduran court after US pardon
Former Honduran president Juan Orlando Hernández returned to Honduras on 26 July after a U.S. presidential pardon and voluntarily appeared before the Supreme Court. A judge ordered him to remain free, requiring a written commitment not to flee, a travel ban and the possibility of alternative precautionary measures such as weekly reporting.
Prosecutors have asked that he be detained pending trial on accusations of fraud and money‑laundering involving roughly $10.8 million diverted to two foundations between 2010 and 2013. The first hearing of the case is scheduled for 12 August. Human‑rights group CODEH criticised the extensive security detail that accompanied Hernández, questioning the fairness of the process. Analyst Lester Ramírez predicted that the judiciary will acquit Hernández, noting that other co‑defendants have already been cleared.
