César Jáuregui arrested over alleged CIA involvement in Chihuahua drug raid

César Gustavo Jáuregui Moreno, the former Attorney General of Chihuahua, was arrested on October 17, 2026, in Chihuahua City. He faces dual legal proceedings: a state-level investigation for illegal exercise of public service and coalition, and a federal investigation by the Fiscalía General de la República (FGR) for treason to the fatherland in matters of national security.

The charges stem from an April 2026 anti-drug operation in El Pinal, Morelos, Chihuahua, aimed at dismantling a synthetic drug laboratory. The FGR alleges that Jáuregui coordinated the operation with the unauthorized participation of U.S. Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) agents, which the federal prosecutor, Ernestina Godoy Ramos, stated violates national sovereignty and the federal pact.

The investigation, which included over 100 acts of inquiry, follows a tragic vehicle accident on April 19, 2026, that killed four people: two Chihuahua state police officers and two U.S. agents. Additionally, Guillermo Arturo Zuany Portillo, a former state prosecutor, is also facing arrest warrants for similar offenses, including providing false information to authorities.
