US intelligence officials warn Trump is concentrating power

A network of over 400 former intelligence and national security officials, known as ‘The Steady State’, has issued an alarm regarding Donald Trump’s second term. The group warns that Trump is following a pattern common to autocrats by concentrating power and systematically weakening democratic institutions and presidential checks and balances.

Key concerns raised by former officials include the use of presidential authority against political critics and the potential misuse of intelligence to support administration positions. For instance, officials noted Trump’s claims regarding Chinese interference in the 2020 election, which contradicted previous National Intelligence Council assessments.

Additionally, the group highlighted the revocation of security clearances for perceived political opponents, such as national security attorney Mark Zaid, as a sign of eroding institutional safeguards. There are also fears that emergency powers could be utilized to influence upcoming midterm elections.
