Former J-League player Hegis living on streets due to drug addiction

Hegis, a former Brazilian footballer who played for clubs including Corinthians and Kyoto Sanga FC, is currently living on the streets of São Paulo due to severe drug addiction. Reports from Brazilian media outlet Globo indicate that the 49-year-old has lost his home, social support, and dignity as a result of his dependency.

His decline follows a history of substance use that began during his professional career. Financial struggles have led to legal issues regarding his apartment, and he was arrested in 2025 following an assault on a building manager. After being unable to stay with relatives or friends, he transitioned to living in makeshift shelters made of cardboard and waterproof sheets.

Despite the severity of his situation, Hegis has reportedly refused offers of rehabilitation and professional support. He expressed a desire for privacy regarding his current state, stating, “I don't want anyone to know I exist. It would be better if they thought I was dead. I am not a pitiful person.”
