Former Japan Post employee charged with receiving ¥1 billion in bribes

A former employee of Japan Post, aged 54, has been formally charged with accepting bribes in connection with postal construction projects. Police allege he received about ¥150,000 in cash each month for roughly ten years, amounting to an estimated total of ¥100 million.

Between 2023 and 2024, the ex‑employee is accused of aiding an Aichi‑based construction firm in securing contracts for new post‑office buildings. In return, he allegedly accepted roughly ¥4.7 million in cash and luxury club entertainment. The company’s president, also 54, has been similarly indicted.

Investigators say the employee used his role in project design and bidding to steer work toward the favored contractor, directing the tendering process to favor the bribing firm’s subcontractors.
