Yasuo Fukuda, former Japanese Prime Minister, dies at 90

Former Japanese Prime Minister Yasuo Fukuda has died at the age of 90 due to heart failure. He passed away on October 22 at a hospital in Tokyo, according to reports from the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) and Nikkei.

Fukuda, the son of former Prime Minister Takeo Fukuda, was the first person in Japanese constitutional history to serve as prime minister in a second generation. He held office from September 2007 to September 2008, succeeding Shinzo Abe. His tenure was marked by the challenges of a “twisted Diet,” where the opposition held a majority in the House of Councillors, complicating legislative processes.

During his premiership, Fukuda chaired the 2008 G8 Summit in Toyako, Hokkaido, and focused on environmental diplomacy and consumer administration reforms, including the groundwork for the establishment of the Consumer Affairs Agency. He was also noted for his efforts to improve relations with China, notably inviting President Hu Jintao to Japan in 2008.

Even after retiring from active politics in 2012, Fukuda remained a significant diplomatic figure. In 2014, he visited China to meet with President Xi Jinping, an initiative credited with helping to thaw relations and paving the way for future summits between Japanese leaders and Beijing.
