Former KPU Chairman denies tailoring election rules for Gibran
Former General Elections Commission (KPU) Chairman Hasyim Asy'ari has denied allegations that educational requirement regulations in PKPU Number 19 of 2023 were specifically designed to facilitate Gibran Rakabuming Raka’s candidacy for Vice President in the 2024 election.
Hasyim clarified that the norms in Article 18 were formulated prior to the Constitutional Court’s ruling on age requirements. He stated that the regulations were the result of public testing and consultations with various entities, including the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Law, through formal working meetings.
The disputed provisions concern the documentation required for presidential and vice-presidential candidates, specifically regarding proof of secondary education graduation. Hasyim emphasized that the rules apply to all potential candidates and were not intended to benefit any specific individual.
