Stefan Bogoev's 30‑day detention under appeal in Macedonia

Former Customs Administration director Stefan Bogoev has been ordered to serve a 30‑day pre‑trial detention in Skopje as part of a corruption probe. Prosecutors allege that Bogoev and three co‑defendants abused public procurement procedures for a tender worth roughly €300,000, receiving illicit benefits including a reported €1,800 bribe and a share of a contract awarded to the firm Remondis Medison.

Bogoev’s defence has filed an appeal and offered a €60,000 guarantee in an effort to secure his release. The appeal was submitted to the public prosecutor on Friday, but the prosecutor has not yet issued an opinion. The case will be forwarded to the Criminal Council for a final decision.

The investigation, led by the Financial Police, also targets alleged money‑laundering and influence‑peddling involving other senior customs officials. Political parties have commented, with the ruling SDSM describing the case as having a political backdrop, while its leader Venco Filipče said he would refrain from remarks until the institutions finish their work.
