Former Maradona Custodian Testifies in Homicide Trial

Former security guard Julio César Coria appeared before the San Isidro criminal court and admitted that he performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation on Diego Armando Maradona on the night of the football legend’s death. Coria said he entered Maradona’s bedroom on 24 November 2020 to fix a light switch, found the former star “lying and covered,” and later, on 25 November, assisted nurses and a caregiver in attempts to revive him.

Coria also testified that Maradona “was fine” hours before his death, contradicting other witnesses who reported a rapid deterioration. He acknowledged prior false‑testimony charges from an earlier trial that was annulled after a documentary scandal. Alongside Coria, the trial includes the former personal doctor Leopoldo Luque, psychiatrist Agustina Cosachov, psychologist Carlos Díaz, several nurses and the Swiss Medical home‑care coordinator, all charged with simple homicide with eventual intent, which carries a potential 8‑25‑year prison term.
