Former Messina Councilor Dino Smedile Dies at 60

Dino Smedile, a former councilor for the IV district of Messina, died at age 60 after a brief hospital stay caused by a sudden illness. A wheelchair user, Smedile was known for his long‑standing advocacy for the rights of people with disabilities, promoting barrier‑free initiatives and accessible city planning.

He had served more than a decade on the council, was elected several times with the Democratic Party, and was a passionate supporter of the local football club ACR Messina. His death prompted tributes from regional politicians, including Movimento 5 Stelle leader Antonio De Luca, councilor Gabriele Ferrante, and local activist Salvatore Lanfranchi, who praised his dedication to the community and volunteer work.
