Former Metropolitan Police officer Mark Tyrrell convicted of rape

Mark Tyrrell, 57, a former Metropolitan Police officer, has been found guilty of one count of rape, three counts of sexual assault, and one count of perverting the course of justice at Southwark Crown Court.

Tyrrell served in the Parliamentary and Diplomatic Protection Command, the same unit as convicted rapists Wayne Couzens and David Carrick. The court heard that Tyrrell raped a woman after she repeatedly refused his advances. During the proceedings, it was revealed that Tyrrell had asked the victim, “Do you realise that what I've just done, that was rape?”

Tyrrell was also convicted of perverting the course of justice for attempting to delete messages sent to the victim. In those messages, he reportedly apologized for “being a sex offender” and “ruining your life by being in it.” The investigation into his conduct began after other officers discovered him hiding beside the victim's bed during an unrelated visit to her home. Tyrrell had resigned from the force in September.
