Julio Meza Gaona Killed in Morelia; Investigation Focuses on Vehicle Theft Motive

Julio Meza Gaona, former coordinator of the Police Investigation unit of the Fiscalía General del Estado (FGE) in Michoacán, was shot dead on the night of 9 July 2026 in Morelia. The attack occurred on Avenida Acueducto near the OOAPAS offices, as he was exiting his gray GMC Sierra. Six security agents normally assigned to his protection were not present, having been dismissed by Meza earlier.

The FGE opened an investigation, emphasizing a possible attempted theft of his vehicle as the primary motive. Prosecutors have conducted forensic examinations, interviews, and intelligence work. A joint operation involving the Guardía Civil, the Secretaría de la Defensa Nacional and the Guardía Nacional was launched to locate the perpetrators, but no arrests have been reported.

During a post‑mortem ceremony the FGE paid tribute, stating, "Hoy honramos su memoria y reconocemos su entrega, profesionalismo y vocación de servicio que durante años brindó a la sociedad michoacana." The agency pledged that the homicide will not go unpunished and that all investigative lines will be pursued until those responsible are brought to justice.
