Balázs Hankó detention extended until February

A Hungarian court has extended the detention of former Minister of Culture and Innovation Balázs Hankó and former State Secretary Veronika Varga-Bajusz until February 1. The decision by the Kecskemét District Court follows a motion by the Bács-Kiskun County Chief Prosecutor's Office.

The suspects are accused of breach of trust committed in criminal conspiracy involving the National Cultural Fund (NKA). Prosecutors allege that between September 2025 and March 2026, the suspects misappropriated over 17.3 billion forints through 1,079 instances of improper fund allocation. It is alleged that these funds were used for purposes deviating from legal requirements, including financing political campaigns and providing grants to Fidesz-linked individuals without proper application processes.

The prosecution cited risks of flight, concealment, influencing the proceedings, and recidivism as grounds for continued detention. Balázs Hankó has denied all allegations, maintaining that his actions complied with laws and government decisions, and has characterized the proceedings as politically motivated.
