Former Minister Catalfo calls for mandatory minimum wage in Italy

Former Minister of Labour and Social Policies, Nunzia Catalfo, has advocated for the implementation of an indispensable, mandatory minimum wage threshold in Italy. Speaking at the IX Confederal Consultation of Confintesa in Rome, Catalfo emphasized that such a measure is necessary to uphold Article 36 of the Italian Constitution, which mandates remuneration sufficient to ensure a free and dignified life.

Catalfo also proposed that this wage threshold be accompanied by new regulations regarding trade union and employer representation. She suggested identifying “leader contracts” to ensure they have erga omnes effectiveness, aiming for high-quality collective bargaining and wages capable of supporting families and workers. Additionally, she highlighted the need for significant investments in human capital within Italian enterprises.
