Daniel Adongo deported from United States after visa overstay and criminal record
Former Indianapolis Colts linebacker Daniel Adongo, the first Kenyan to play in the NFL, was removed from the United States by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). Adongo appeared in five games for the Colts between 2013 and 2015 before being released in December 2015. His visa expired in 2016 and he remained in the country illegally, during which time he accumulated multiple arrests for felony intimidation, battery, criminal mischief and other offenses, including a 2020 conviction that led to a 364‑day jail sentence. Under the Laken Riley Act, his criminal history triggered mandatory detention and removal. ICE confirmed that Adongo was detained at a Miami correctional facility and was deported on June 20, with the agency announcing the action in late July. He has since returned to Kenya.
ICE officials said the deportation improves community safety, and the case highlights the agency's broader effort to enforce immigration laws against individuals with criminal records, even former professional athletes.
