Former NFL Star LeRoy Irvin Dies at 68 from Neck Cancer Complications

LeRoy Irvin, a former Los Angeles Rams cornerback, died on July 2 at age 68. A death certificate lists the immediate cause as acute hypoxic respiratory failure from neck mass obstruction, with aspiration pneumonia and head‑and‑neck squamous cell carcinoma as contributing conditions. Irvin had previously battled lymphoma, Parkinson’s disease, dementia, hypertension, and prostate cancer, and underwent a tracheostomy on June 14 in an effort to ease breathing.

Irvin played 11 NFL seasons—ten with the Rams and one with the Detroit Lions—earning two Pro Bowl selections and holding the league record for most punt‑return yards in a game. Teammate Eric Dickerson remembered him as a "lockdown corner" and close friend. Irvin was cremated, and his ashes were scattered at sea off Rosarito, Mexico.
