Alhaji Abubakar Alhaji, former Minister of Finance (1990‑1991) and former High Commissioner to the United Kingdom (1992‑1996), died after a brief illness at Nizamiye Hospital in Abuja on 30 July 2026. He was reported to be 88 years old. Alhaji held the traditional title Sardauna of Sokoto from 1990, a position historically linked to the Sokoto Caliphate.

Vice President Kashim Shettima led a federal delegation to Sokoto for the funeral, held at the Sultan Bello Juma’at Mosque, and announced that the government will immortalise Alhaji’s legacy. President Bola Ahmed Tinubu also expressed condolences, describing him as a titan of public service. The burial took place at the Hubbare Royal Cemetery, attended by the Sultan of Sokoto, senior ministers and other dignitaries.
