Former NRL players propose funding for grassroots rugby league

Former NRL players Paul Gallen and James Maloney have proposed solutions to support both retiring professional athletes and struggling regional rugby league clubs.

Paul Gallen suggested that the NRL should provide financial incentives, ranging from $50,000 to $150,000, for retiring players to move to country teams to coach and embed themselves in local communities. He noted that higher payments should be offered to those moving to regional areas to help draw crowds back to bush football.

James Maloney has previously proposed that the NRL set aside a $1 million fund to assist players transitioning out of professional rugby league. These initiatives aim to address the high costs and volunteer pressures faced by grassroots clubs while providing a structured pathway for players facing life after the spotlight.
