Former policeman convicted of 2006 murder in Victoria
Steven Frederick Johnson, 74, has been found guilty of murdering his tenant, Christopher Jarvis, in a cold case dating back to June 2006. The verdict was delivered in the Victorian Supreme Court following a trial regarding the disappearance of the 38-year-old, who was last seen leaving his Wangoom home.
The jury heard that the motive for the killing was a dispute over $2,210 in unpaid rent. Prosecutors argued that Johnson attacked Mr. Jarvis in his driveway with a starter pistol and a baseball bat before dragging him to a remote forest. Johnson and an accomplice allegedly buried Mr. Jarvis in a shallow grave and set fire to the victim's vehicle at Thunder Point.
Despite the conviction, the body of Christopher Jarvis has never been recovered.
