Former Polish Deputy Health Minister Anna Knysok Dies at 75

Anna Knysok, a former member of parliament and deputy minister of health in the Jerzy Buzek government, died on 27 July 2026 at the age of 75. Born on 19 July 1951 in Chorzów, she held degrees in psychology and nursing and was active in the Solidarity movement from 1980, spending several months in detention after her 1983 arrest. Knysok co‑authored the 1999‑2001 health‑care reform that introduced the system of health‑insurance funds (kasy chorych) and later directed several hospitals in Chorzów, including serving as director of the municipal hospital network from 2011‑2019. She was awarded the Cross of Freedom and Solidarity in 2011 for her anti‑communist activities.

Former health minister Prof. Wojciech Maksymowicz, the president of the Upper Silesian Union Grzegorz Franki and Chorzów mayor Szymon Michałek all posted tributes, praising her commitment, energy and role in building Poland’s modern health‑care system.
