Former President Yoon Suk-yeol Sentenced to Two Years, Appeal Set for August

Former South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol was sentenced by the Seoul Central District Court to two years’ imprisonment and a fine of about 13.96 million won for violating the political‑fund law by receiving unpaid polling services from broker Min Tae‑kyun. The ruling also raises the question of whether the People Power Party (PPP) must repay the 39.7 billion won election‑fund subsidy it received when Yoon won the 2022 presidential election.

The Seoul High Court has scheduled the first hearing of Yoon’s appeal for 21 August. Min Tae‑kyun, who was also sentenced to imprisonment in the first trial, will face the same appellate proceeding. The case follows earlier findings that Yoon and his spouse, Kim Keon‑hee, obtained at least 14 free polls, prompting the court to order the penalties now under review.
