Former Princess Mako and Kei Komuro mark five years since controversial wedding

Former Japanese Princess Mako and her husband, Kei Komuro, are marking five years since their wedding on October 26, 2021. The union followed a period of significant controversy and delays stemming from a financial scandal involving unpaid debts attributed to Komuro’s mother.

Due to the public scrutiny and the nature of the marriage, Mako renounced her imperial title and declined traditional royal wedding ceremonies and the customary financial allowance provided by the Japanese state. The couple opted for a discreet civil ceremony rather than a formal imperial wedding.

Since moving to the United States in November 2021, the couple has established a life in New York, where Komuro works for a law firm after graduating from Fordham University. The couple has also since become parents.
