Former professor detained for solar energy tender bribery

A former mechanical engineering professor from a national university in southern Taiwan has been detained for allegedly accepting bribes to manipulate solar energy procurement and leasing tenders.

The suspect, identified by the surname Wang, served as a selection committee member for public works projects following his retirement. Prosecutors allege that Wang leaked confidential documents, including unannounced specification manuals and service proposals, to specific vendors to ensure their success.

Investigations revealed that Wang received 650,000 TWD from one vendor, identified as Lin, to facilitate their winning bid. Following an initial release on bail, Wang was caught by surveillance teams attempting to solicit an additional 1.44 million TWD from another businessman, Liu, for similar favors.

The Kaohsiung District Prosecutors Office, working with the Agency Against Corruption, has charged Wang and Liu with violations of the Anti-Corruption Act and the disclosure of confidential documents. The Kaohsiung District Court has ordered the detention of both individuals without access to visitors.
