Ahmad Mohammad Ismail, former Republican Guard general, arrested in Syria
Syrian Internal Security forces have arrested former Major General Ahmad Mohammad Ismail, a high-ranking commander in the Republican Guard under the ousted Bashar al-Assad administration. Authorities state that Ismail played a direct role in leading military offensives in Aleppo, Daraa, and Eastern Ghouta during the civil war.
Ismail’s military career included serving as a platoon commander, a company commander in the 101st Airborne Regiment, and the regiment’s operations chief in 2016. He also held senior positions as the chief of staff of the Republican Guard for six months and later as the commander of the 14th Division.
This arrest is part of a broader crackdown on former military and security officials following the fall of the previous government in December 2024. In separate operations, five senior air force officers were detained in Tartus, and nine pilots were previously arrested in Latakia on accusations of committing war crimes through airstrikes against civilians.
