Former school coaches face prison for student sexual abuse
Two separate legal proceedings involving former school employees for the sexual abuse of students have concluded in the United States.
In Haralson County, Georgia, a jury convicted Geoffrey Brad Matthews, a former Bremen High School coach and bus driver, on 13 counts including child molestation, grooming, and enticing a minor. The conviction followed an 11-day trial where eight victims provided testimony. Matthews faces up to 147 years in prison, though a formal sentencing date has not been announced. He still faces additional, unrelated sex crime charges in Carroll and Paulding counties.
In San Mateo County, California, Anthony Gutierrez-Molina was sentenced to two years and eight months in prison for sexually abusing two students while serving as an athletic director and soccer coach at Summit Everest High School. Gutierrez-Molina pleaded no contest to felony counts of unlawful sexual intercourse and oral copulation with minors. He will be required to register as a sex offender.
