Former Secret Service agent shares LIARS method for lie detection

Brad Beeler, a retired Secret Service polygraph examiner with 25 years of experience, has introduced a mnemonic system called ‘LIARS’ to identify suspicious behavior. Speaking on the outlet Stories and LADBible, Beeler explained that truthful memories function like a movie reel that can be easily rewound or fast-forwarded, whereas fabricated stories cause mental strain during recall.

The LIARS acronym consists of:

• Latency: The delay between a question and an answer. • Incongruence: A mismatch between verbal responses and physical signals. • Avoidance: Providing a response that does not actually answer the question. • Resistance: Disproportionate reactions to inquiries. • [Note: The provided text cuts off before the final letter is fully detailed].

Beeler cautioned that common beliefs about body language are often unreliable. He described the idea that eye movement patterns can reveal lies as ‘nonsense’ and noted that some liars may actually make more intense eye contact to appear convincing. He also clarified that polygraphs do not detect lies directly, but rather measure physiological responses such as heart rate, breathing, and skin response.
