Shin Bet official urges armed protection for synagogues during Yom Kippur

Arik Barbing, a former senior official of the Shin Bet, has issued a public warning urging Israeli gun permit holders to carry their weapons to synagogues during the upcoming Yom Kippur holiday.

Speaking in an interview with Radio 103FM, Barbing noted that because it is impossible to guarantee absolute security for every place of worship, armed civilians could serve as a “first line of defense” against potential terrorist attacks. He cited previous serious incidents at synagogues and yeshivas as justification for the appeal, emphasizing that the current security situation is highly sensitive.

Barbing also addressed concerns regarding the potential misuse of Palestinian police weapons against Israelis, stating that the military and Shin Bet are professionally addressing the issue. He advised that such security discussions should remain professional and avoid media exposure to prevent unnecessary tension.
