Former São Paulo FC president Julio Casares faces investigation over alleged million‑real cash withdrawals

Julio Casares, the former president of São Paulo FC, is being investigated by a Police Civil and Public Prosecutor task force for alleged irregularities during his 2021‑2026 tenure. Two witnesses testified that Casares regularly withdrew cash in envelopes, typically around R$ 100 000 per month, amounting to roughly R$ 11 million across 35 withdrawals, with an additional R$ 1.5 million deposited in his personal accounts.

The investigations, encompassing three separate inquiries, focus on the alleged misuse of club funds purportedly for promotional actions and ticket purchases, many of which lack clear documentation. An internal report indicated that nearly R$ 7 million could not be accounted for, leading the club’s Deliberative Council to reject the 2025 accounts. Casares denies any wrongdoing, asserting that the cash withdrawals were linked to at least 172 club matches and that all transactions are properly recorded.

In March, following an impeachment request and the council’s decision, Casares resigned from his position. His legal team maintains his innocence and promises to present technical evidence to prove his integrity.
