Former South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol Examined Over Military Emergency Messages

South Korea's former president Yoon Suk Yeol, who was impeached and sentenced to life imprisonment for his 2024 declaration of a military emergency, was examined by a special advisory team on Saturday. Investigators allege Yoon abused his authority by directing the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the National Security Office to send messages to allied nations, including the United States, portraying the emergency as a legitimate action taken to protect democracy against pro‑North Korean forces.

The messages were reportedly translated into English and forwarded to a CIA official shortly after the emergency was declared on 3 December 2024. Officials said the probe is focused on Yoon’s motives for issuing the messages and the circumstances surrounding their transmission. Yoon remains detained at Seoul Detention Center while the investigation continues.
