Former Tokyo Special Investigations Prosecutor Dismissed Over Sexual Misconduct

Tokyo District Prosecutors Office announced on July 29 that former special investigations prosecutor Masahito Nishida was dismissed for conduct that severely damaged public confidence. Nishida had used a publicly funded hotel room to engage in sexual relations with a woman who had been a suspect in a case he investigated, and he received electronic‑money payments and exchanged gifts with her. The relationship continued after the investigation closed, violating ethical rules that prohibit prosecutors from receiving benefits from individuals involved in their cases. Justice Minister Hiroyuki Hiraguchi condemned the actions, stating they “seriously undermine trust in the prosecution,” and pledged stricter guidance and preventive measures. An apology press conference was held by Deputy Prosecutor‑General Hiroshi Ichikawa, who described the behavior as “extremely regrettable.”
