Former Tulum treasurer sentenced for illegal firearm possession

Vicente Francisco Aldape Moncada, the former municipal treasurer of Tulum, has been sentenced to three years and nine months in prison for the unlicensed possession of firearms.

The conviction followed an incident on July 2, 2024, at Terminal 2 of the Cancún International Airport. During a security screening, National Guard officers used X-ray equipment to detect weapons in Aldape Moncada’s luggage. A physical inspection revealed two firearms, two magazines, and 33 rounds of ammunition.

The sentence was obtained through an abbreviated procedure following an investigation by the Specialized Prosecutor's Office for Regional Control (FECOR). In addition to the prison term, Aldape Moncada must pay a fine of 100 Units of Measure and Update (UMA), totaling 11,731 pesos. Aldape Moncada resigned from his position as municipal treasurer shortly after his initial detention.
