Former Werder Bremen goalkeeper Felix Wiedwald runs for CDU in Verden local elections

Former Bundesliga goalkeeper Felix Wiedwald, who made 73 top‑flight appearances for Werder Bremen and also played for Eintracht Frankfurt, MSV Duisburg, Leeds United, FC Emmen and SV Sandhausen, retired from professional football in 2022. Since autumn 2025 he has been a full‑time scout for Werder Bremen and a member of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU).

Wiedwald is standing as a CDU candidate in the municipal election in Verden, Lower Saxony, scheduled for 13 September. He is contesting seats on both the town council and the district council and has joined the campaign team of CDU mayoral hopeful Björn Symank. He emphasised that, unlike many who complain, he wants to take responsibility by entering politics.

The candidacy marks Wiedwald’s transition from a football career that included 73 Bundesliga games and 62 second‑division matches to active involvement in local government.
