Supreme Court to rule on Gildo Insfrán's potential ninth term in Formosa
The Supreme Court of Justice of the Nation has declared itself competent to rule on the constitutionality of a reform in Formosa that could allow Governor Gildo Insfrán to seek a ninth consecutive term.
The legal challenge was brought by the Confederación Frente Amplio Formoseño, which argues that a transitory clause in the new provincial constitution enables Insfrán and Vice Governor Eber Solís to run for the 2027-2031 period. While the reform officially limits mandates to two consecutive terms, the clause treats the current administration's tenure as a first term, effectively bypassing previous court rulings that declared indefinite reelection unconstitutional.
The Court has granted the province of Formosa and the State Attorney's Office 60 days to respond to the lawsuit. This follows a December 2024 precedent where the Court ruled that indefinite reelection imposes an ‘intolerably high cost to the republican system’ and facilitates authoritarian practices.
