Argentina water utilities face privatization and provincial funding shifts

Argentina is seeing significant shifts in its water and sanitation sector. In Formosa, the provincial government is using its own funds through Aguas de Formosa S.A. to continue the repowering of the Toma Norte plant. This project, which faced a loss of national funding, aims to expand water catchment and production capacity to meet projected demand through 2035.

Simultaneously, the national government is moving forward with the privatization of Agua y Saneamientos Argentinos (AySA). As part of this process, AySA has proposed a redesign of water and sewage tariffs, which could impact millions of households in the AMBA region. The proposal includes a new scale for zonal coefficients, and the Water and Sanitation Regulatory Entity (ERAS) has scheduled a public hearing to discuss the changes.

Debates regarding the management of AySA continue, with arguments suggesting that control of the company should be transferred to the City of Buenos Aires and the Province of Buenos Aires to better manage resources and coverage disparities.
