Formosa teachers stage strike demanding salary overhaul

In the Argentine province of Formosa, teachers have mounted a 24‑hour strike and protests demanding an urgent recomposition of their salaries. Union leader Manuel Pereyra of Voz Docente said salaries have fallen far below the basic basket, with the guaranteed salary around 1 million pesos while a living wage requires about 1.5 million pesos. The union is calling for a genuine parity table that includes all teacher unions and for a 45 % increase over the basic wage, which currently sits at roughly 300 000 pesos.

The provincial government, led by Governor Gildo Insfrán, previously approved a 14 % raise split into two installments earlier in the year, but teachers argue that inflation and cost‑of‑living pressures have erased any gain. The protest also highlighted administrative delays, staffing issues, and exclusion of critical unions from negotiations. Teachers demand that the guaranteed salary be aligned with the cost of the basic basket and that a true collective bargaining process be opened.
