Formula 1 2026: Young star Kimi Antonelli shines as Bahrain GP drives Malaysia tourism gains

Nineteen‑year‑old Kimi Antonelli has emerged as Mercedes' leading driver in the 2026 Formula 1 season, winning six of the first eleven races and challenging teammate George Russell for the team’s top spot. Max Verstappen criticised the new 2026 hybrid power‑unit regulations, calling them a threat to the sport’s authenticity.

Malaysia’s tourism sector expects a significant economic spill‑over from the Bahrain Grand Prix, which will be staged at the Sepang International Circuit from 2‑4 October. Tourism Malaysia’s director Mohd Amirul Rizal Abdul Rahim said the event will boost hotel bookings, bus tours and food sales across the Klang Valley and Johor, with support from Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim and a planned F1 carnival. The nearby Singapore Grand Prix is also expected to bring additional visitors to Johor.

The combined focus on on‑track competition and off‑track economic benefits highlights the growing influence of Formula 1 in the region.
