Formula 1 CEO Stefano Domenicali criticizes EU Green Deal
Formula 1 CEO Stefano Domenicali has criticized the European Union’s Green Deal and its approach to the automotive energy transition, labeling the political decision to focus solely on electric vehicles as a ‘scellerata’ (wicked/foolish) choice.
Domenicali stated that following the Dieselgate scandal, European policymakers made a fundamental error by imposing a single technological direction rather than providing incentives for various emission-reduction solutions. He noted that the 2035 ban on internal combustion engines targets goals that were arguably impossible to reach given Europe’s existing technological and raw material culture.
The CEO warned that this policy has become a boomerang for the European automotive industry, which is currently facing significant crises, such as the potential closure of four Volkswagen factories. He suggested that European manufacturers must collaborate more closely rather than working autonomously to remain competitive against Chinese manufacturers.
