F1 chief Stefano Domenicali says fans uninterested in car data, sparks driver backlash
Formula 1 chief Stefano Domenicali stated that “no one is interested in how you drive your car,” suggesting most viewers focus only on on‑track action and not on technical details such as throttle angles or brake pressure. He said the comment came after a discussion with filmmaker George Lucas at the Hungarian Grand Prix.
The remark provoked a swift reaction from Red Bull Supercars driver Scott Pye, who called the comment insulting to fans and criticised the sport’s decision to remove on‑screen graphics showing battery levels, speed and braking data at the recent Silverstone and Spa‑Francorchamps races. The absence of these indicators, he argued, made it harder for viewers to follow overtaking moves, especially as the two circuits were “energy‑starved,” leading to frequent super‑clipping.
The graphics were reinstated for the Hungarian Grand Prix, and some drivers, including Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri, have also voiced concerns about the new power‑unit regulations that increase the technical complexity of the cars.
