Formula 1 drivers divided over cooling vest rules in Singapore

Formula 1 drivers are divided over the use of FIA-mandated cooling vests as extreme heat returns for the Singapore Grand Prix. Under FIA regulations, an official heat warning is issued when temperatures are expected to exceed 31 degrees Celsius, requiring drivers to either wear a cooling vest or carry an additional 500 grams of ballast to ensure competitive parity.

Several drivers have expressed skepticism regarding the equipment. Isack Hadjar and Franco Colapinto have criticized the vests, with Hadjar suggesting they should be banned to maintain the difficulty of the sport. Kimi Antonelli has opted not to use the technology following negative experiences, including a pump failure during the 2025 United States Grand Prix that distributed hot water and resulted in heatstroke. Antonelli stated he prefers to rely on physical training rather than equipment he deems unreliable.

While some drivers like Carlos Sainz and Charles Leclerc report benefits from the technology, others argue the cooling effect diminishes during a race or that the vests restrict cockpit movement. Mercedes driver George Russell has called on the FIA to take greater responsibility for addressing the challenges posed by extreme heat conditions.
