Formula 1 drivers face penalty point scrutiny ahead of Italian GP

Formula 1 drivers are facing varying levels of scrutiny under the sport’s penalty points system ahead of the Italian Grand Prix. The system, introduced in 2014 to address declining driving standards and frequent collisions, tracks transgressions on a driver's superlicense. If a driver accumulates 12 points within a 12-month period, they face a one-race ban, a threshold previously reached by Kevin Magnussen.

Currently, Kimi Antonelli and Ollie Bearman both hold four penalty points. Antonelli’s points stem from a collision with Charles Leclerc, forcing a driver off track, and failing to slow under yellow flags. Bearman’s points are the result of defensive direction changes and collisions with Liam Lawson and Carlos Sainz. Lance Stroll also carries three penalty points.

There is ongoing debate regarding the application of these penalties. While the system aims to curb dangerous driving, discussions have emerged regarding whether racing accidents and collisions should be penalized as heavily as safety violations, such as ignoring flags.
