Formula 1 drivers survive life-threatening racing accidents

Formula 1 is noted for its high-speed spectacle and inherent dangers, which have occasionally resulted in life-threatening accidents for drivers. Notable instances of drivers narrowly avoiding death include Niki Lauda, Robert Kubica, and Felipe Massa.

During the 2009 Hungarian Grand Prix qualifying session, Felipe Massa sustained a severe head injury when a disconnected part from the rear shock absorber of Rubens Barrichello's car struck his helmet at approximately 175 mph. The impact caused skull fractures and a severe brain injury, requiring Massa to be placed in an induced coma for emergency surgery. Following his recovery, he successfully returned to racing in 2010.
