Formula 1 explores Portimão and Baku as replacements for cancelled Bahrain Grand Prix

Renewed fighting in the Middle East has forced Formula 1 Management (FOM) to scrap the postponed Bahrain Grand Prix and look for alternatives to preserve the 2026 calendar. At the Belgian Grand Prix in Spa, chief executive Stefano Domenicali said the sport is weighing a return to the Portimão circuit in Portugal and the possibility of holding a second race in Baku, Azerbaijan, to keep the schedule close to the target of 21‑22 events.

Domenicali emphasized that safety for staff and fans remains the top priority and that a decision will be taken as soon as possible, with discussions ongoing among teams and officials. The league aims to maintain broadcaster and sponsor commitments while navigating the uncertainty caused by the regional conflict.
