Formula 1 to hold season finale in Qatar and Abu Dhabi
Formula 1 CEO Stefano Domenicali has confirmed that the championship will proceed with its planned season finale in the Middle East, despite ongoing conflict in the region. The Grand Prix in Qatar is scheduled for November 29, followed by the season finale in Abu Dhabi on December 6. This decision effectively removes the previously discussed option of moving the final race to Imola, Italy.
Domenicali stated that the decision was made based on the information and assurances currently available to the sport. The move to maintain these races is also tied to significant financial interests, as both Qatar and Abu Dhabi pay substantial premiums to host events on the calendar. This follows the cancellation of the Saudi Arabian and Bahraini Grands Prix due to regional tensions; however, the Bahrain Grand Prix is being rescheduled to take place in Sepang, Malaysia.
While the official schedule remains unchanged, the situation has caused internal debate. Driver Max Verstappen has not ruled out a potential boycott of the Qatar and Abu Dhabi races if security concerns persist. Additionally, drivers like Valtteri Bottas and Oliver Bearman have raised concerns regarding alternative locations, citing potential weather issues in Italy and complexities regarding Italian tax scrutiny for foreign athletes.
