Formula 1 pit stop methodologies improve hospital patient care

Medical professionals at Great Ormond Street Hospital (GOSH) in London have successfully applied Formula 1 pit stop methodologies to improve patient handovers and intensive care procedures. Inspired by the precision and speed of McLaren’s pit stops, pediatric cardiac surgeon Dr. Martin Elliott and his team studied how motorsport crews manage roles, communication, and high-pressure tasks.

To implement these changes, hospital staff visited Ferrari’s headquarters in Maranello to observe mechanics managing responsibilities and information transfer. This led to the introduction of standardized procedures, operational checklists, and clearly defined roles for transferring patients from operating rooms to intensive care units.

A 2007 study by GOSH and the University of Oxford demonstrated that these F1-inspired organizational changes resulted in a reduction of technical errors, information omissions, and the time required for patient transfers.
