Mercedes boss Toto Wolff cites budget constraints in F1 development race
Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff has stated that the team lacks the financial resources to match the rapid development pace of rivals McLaren and Ferrari during the 2026 Formula 1 season. Despite an early-season dominance where Mercedes won the first six races, the team's advantage has eroded as competitors have introduced more frequent and significant upgrades.
Wolff attributed this constraint to the $215 million annual cost cap, explaining that Mercedes is attempting to distribute its budget evenly across the season to optimize championship points. He noted, “We haven’t got the money to put developments on the car,” adding that the team must balance spending between chassis improvements and addressing reliability issues that have cost them an estimated 50 to 100 points.
While Mercedes currently leads the Constructors' Championship, the gap is closing. McLaren has seen a surge in performance following recent victories by Lando Norris, and Ferrari remains a close competitor. McLaren principal Andrea Stella expressed skepticism regarding Wolff's claims, suggesting Mercedes may still have untapped potential in wind tunnel testing.
