Trapani political deadlock threatens waste service and jobs

A political impasse in the Trapani City Council regarding the approval of the 2027 Economic and Financial Plan (PEF) for waste management is threatening local employment and public services. The delay in approving the plan has led the waste management company, Formula Ambiente, to initiate collective dismissal procedures for 15 workers due to anticipated service reductions in late 2026. Labor unions warn that without the PEF, the number of layoffs could double in 2027.

Recent council sessions have been marked by intense friction. During a recent meeting, Mayor Tranchida and the President of the Council, Mazzeo, engaged in a heated confrontation, with the Mayor accusing the President of obstructing the debate to protect specific political interests. Despite attempts by the majority to bring the PEF and TARI tax measures to a vote, the council failed to reach a decision, leaving the financial stability of the waste service and the job security of approximately 121 Formula Ambiente employees in uncertainty.
