Formula E aims to surpass Formula 1 performance by 2030
Formula E CEO Jeff Dodds has expressed ambitions to rival Formula 1 in pure performance through the development of the Gen5 racing car. Dodds believes that advancements in battery technology will allow electric racing to surpass the performance limits of internal combustion engines, which he describes as a 130-year-old technology. The goal for 2030 is to introduce a Gen5 vehicle that could become the most powerful racing car ever made.
As the championship prepares for the Gen4 era in the 2026-2027 season, the new cars will feature permanent all-wheel drive and power outputs reaching 450 kW, with an increase to 600 kW in Attack Mode.
Dodds is also looking to increase the series' profile by engaging top-tier talent, specifically expressing interest in having Formula 1 champion Max Verstappen test the cars and potentially collaborate with the series, especially with Formula E returning to the Netherlands in 2027.
