Formula One cancels Bahrain Grand Prix amid escalating Middle East conflict

The 2024 Bahrain Grand Prix has been fully cancelled after F1 officials and team representatives concluded that the worsening conflict in the Middle East made the event unsafe. Earlier hopes of moving the race to early October were abandoned, leaving uncertainty over the remainder of the season's schedule.

The sport’s 2026 calendar, announced separately, will feature 24 races worldwide, beginning in Australia on 8 March and ending with Abu Dhabi on 6 December. It includes a new Grand Prix in Madrid in September, a return to Bahrain on 12 April, and a repeat of existing venues such as Saudi Arabia, Japan, the United States and others. Former world champion Fernando Alonso commented on his own future, saying, “My decision for next year will be more about the rules,” highlighting how broader regulatory questions are also shaping the sport.

The cancellation underscores how geopolitical tensions can directly affect international sporting events, while the upcoming 2026 schedule shows Formula One’s continued expansion across continents.
