Formula One championship history and record holders

Since its inception in 1950, Formula One has crowned 35 different world champions. The sport's history is marked by technical evolution and legendary rivalries, spanning from early pioneers like Giuseppe Farina and Juan Manuel Fangio to modern era icons.

Michael Schumacher and Lewis Hamilton hold the record for the most championships, with seven titles each. Schumacher achieved five consecutive titles with Ferrari, while Hamilton's era was highlighted by Mercedes' eight consecutive constructors' titles between 2014 and 2021. Juan Manuel Fangio follows with five titles, having won with four different constructors.

The most recent championship concluded in December 2025, when Lando Norris secured his first Drivers' Championship at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. Norris won the title by a two-point margin over Max Verstappen.
